Important

An application either online or by regular mail must contain the following information

  • The name and a complete address of the owner of the copyright: some authors prefer to use pen names, rather than their real names, on their published works. You may include your pen name on your application for registration, but you must also give your full legal name. This is necessary because, without your legal name, it would be difficult to determine the full duration of the copyright, i.e., your lifetime plus 50 years.
  • The title/name of the work
  • A list of the tracks to be registered
  • Number of tracks (Only applicable if registering an album)
  • A declaration that the applicant is one of the following: the author of the work; the owner of the copyright in the work; an assignee of the copyright; or a person to whom an interest in the copyright has been granted by licence.

Some authors prefer to use noms de plume, or pen names, rather than their real names, on their published works. Pen names may be included on the application for registration, but the author’s full legal name is required. The latter is required in order to assist in the calculation of the duration of the rights which are based on the lifetime of the author

To ensure the registration details are recorded accurately
- you must include all the information and components requested. see Submissions page

What the registration covers

Normally, each song, book, recording, etc., is considered a separate work and requires a separate application and fee. However, if you are registering an album of up to a fourteen tracks, you may register the album as one work.

Copyright registration becomes effective on the date this Copyright Office receives all the required components in an acceptable form as outlined, regardless of how long it then takes to process the application and mail the certificate of registration. The time our Copyright Office requires to process an application varies, depending on the amount of material the copyright department is receiving

We register the copyrights of songs, music lyrics and poetry only.

We reserve the right to refuse to accept any work/compositions we consider to be in direct breach of any known or existing copyright.
